Context

Why decide now

  • vSphere 8 leaves general support on 11 October 2027. Source
  • VMware licences are now per-core subscriptions, with a minimum of 16 cores per socket. Source.
  • A CloudBolt survey (February 2026, 302 IT leaders at North American firms with more than 1,000 employees) found that 86% are reducing their VMware footprint, but only 4% have left it entirely. Source.

Leaving slowly and with a plan costs less than leaving in a hurry because of a renewal date.

Scope

What is included

  • Inventory of hosts, virtual machines, storage, networks and service dependencies.
  • Workload classification: move, keep or retire.
  • Comparison of targets. OpenShift Virtualization as the main option; Proxmox, Hyper-V with Azure Local and Nutanix at comparison level.
  • Three-year costs: licences, hardware and migration effort.
  • Risks: Windows drivers, backups, networking (NSX), storage.
  • A wave plan with cutover windows.

Timeline

What an assessment looks like

  1. Week 1

Read-only access and data collection. A short interview with whoever knows the applications.

  2. Week 2

Analysis, workload classification and comparison of targets with their costs.

  3. Week 3

Report, wave plan and presentation session.

Afterwards

If you decide to go ahead

I can build the pilot and automate the first wave with Ansible, quoted separately with a fixed scope. If you would rather have another provider do it, the report works just as well.

Fit

Who it is for

Organisations with up to about 10 hosts and a VMware renewal or end of support in the next 12 to 18 months, already using Linux or Red Hat or considering it.

I don't offer 24/7 on-call or mass migrations, and my VMware experience runs to 2018. The value here is the analysis and the plan.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why assess before migrating?

Because not everything should move at once. According to Gartner, a full migration can take more than three years. The assessment decides what to move first, what to keep and what to retire, with three-year costs in view.

Do you work with Proxmox, Nutanix or Hyper-V?

I compare them in the assessment. My implementation focus is OpenShift Virtualization and KVM with Ansible automation. If another platform fits better, I will say so and point you to someone who implements it well.

How much VMware do you know today?

I worked with vSphere, vCenter, NSX and vCloud Director between 2010 and 2018. I know how those environments work inside, which is what it takes to take them apart. I don't offer current vSphere 8 or VMware Cloud Foundation administration.

How do you work and how do you invoice?

Remotely, under a written contract that fixes scope, deliverables and mutual confidentiality. I invoice as a self-employed professional in Spain, with 30-day payment terms. Prices on this site exclude VAT.
